More than 50 musicians, dancers, and actors joined together for a final performance at Millennium Park. Through a spectacular musical journey, young Zulema zig-zags through the culturally diverse landscapes from her Chiapas home in Mexico to Chicago.
I was brought on to be the Technical Director through Jeff Spitz, Founder of Groundswell Educational Films. I wore different hats for this role: videography, animation, and of course, directing the live show!
Throughout the show, visuals were projected on a large screen behind the performers. These were queued throughout the performance to emphasize both the physical and emotional journey of Zulema’s travels. I went around Chicago filming neighborhoods and researching archival footage of Mexico. I also added animation during certain emotional scenes. In the end there were over 20 video scenes that accompanied the performers.
This one hour performance captivated a full audience at Millennium Park. This was my first time collaborating with live performers and theatrical directors. That meant attending rehearsals to time the scenes correctly. Seeing a theater production react live to my work was very fun and rewarding for me!
